Re-actors

May 15, 2007

swaalsd1.gifBad actors act. Good actors react. They are excellent listeners and react appropriately, clearly, and effectively. This goes hand in hand with my previous posts about film being about thought. Film captures the thinking process.

The thinking process is informed by listening to the other characters, and observing the situations that unfold around the character.

Listen, listen, listen.

“What I hate about today’s movies is you never see the character thinking. Thinking allows the audience become part of the film story” –Steven Spielberg

swaalsd2.gifThinking and listening go hand in hand. If you have a 3 shot with all the characters in discussion, the most common habit in animation is to focus all your energies on the character who is talking. Very little thought is given to the characters who are listening. On some level, the performance of the listeners will provide more credibility and drama to the character who is speaking, more than what that one character could do alone. The reaction is often much more important than the action.
